Promoting Environmental Security and Climate Resilience for sustainable Peace and Development

Activities related to the environment, climate change, and environmental security that the Horn of Africa Institute for Peace and Security will focus on:

  1. Conflict-sensitive Environmental Assessments: Conduct comprehensive assessments to understand the environmental implications of conflicts in the region, identify potential environmental security risks, and develop strategies to mitigate these risks.
  2. Environmental Peacemaking Workshops: Organise workshops that explore the role of environmental degradation in conflicts and the potential for environmental peacemaking, emphasising the interconnectedness of environmental sustainability and peacebuilding.
  3. Climate Resilience Training for Peacebuilders: Develop and deliver training programmes that equip peacebuilders with the knowledge and tools to address climate-related challenges, integrating climate resilience strategies into peace and security efforts.
  4. Community-Based Natural Resource Management: Support community-led initiatives for sustainable natural resource management, focusing on conflict-sensitive approaches to resource access, utilisation, and governance.
  5. Environmental Diplomacy and Advocacy: Engage in diplomatic efforts to advocate for environmental security, fostering partnerships with regional and international stakeholders to address environmental challenges as a key component of sustainable peace and development.
  6. Gender-Responsive Climate Action: Integrate a gender perspective into climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts, recognising the unique impact of climate change on women and promoting gender-inclusive approaches to environmental security.
  7. Conflict-sensitive Environmental Policy Development: Contribute to the development of conflict-sensitive environmental policies, emphasising the importance of considering environmental factors in conflict prevention, resolution, and post-conflict reconstruction.
  8. Environmental Mediation and Conflict Resolution: Develop capacity-building programs focused on environmental mediation and conflict resolution, empowering local leaders and practitioners to address environmental disputes and promote sustainable solutions.
  9. Environmental Peacebuilding Research: Undertake research initiatives to investigate the linkages between environmental sustainability, climate change, and peacebuilding, generating evidence-based insights to inform policy and practise in the region.
